Description

Members of the 1st Light Horse Regiment on their arrival on Anzac Beach. Identified, standing centre facing front on, is 181 Private (Pte) Timothy William McCristal. Pte McCristal was wounded during the attack on a Turkish position on 7 August 1915 and invalided back to Australia. He then briefly served as a recruitment sergeant due to his background as a leader and speaker in the trade union movement, before becoming active in the anti-conscription movement. Seated far left is Major (Maj) Cecil Horace Granville. Maj Granville had served in the South African (Boer) War with the 1st Australian Horse. He was later awarded the Distinguished Service Order and the Romanian Officer of the Order of Crown of Romania for his service during the First World War.
