Description

Collection relating to the First World War service of 1075 Sergeant John Dunbar Devine, 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion, France and Belgium, 1916-1918. Dunbar enlisted with the 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion in Adelaide on 10 March 1916. The battalion was formed in the aftermath of the failed Gallipoli campaign, with volunteers drawn from Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. The 3rd Pioneer Battalion served on the Western Front in France and Belgium until the end of the war. Assigned to the 3rd Division, it fought in most of the major battles supported by the Australian Imperial Force. The collection consists of a handwritten nominal roll compiled by Devine, which records details of the 3rd Pioneers, including service number, rank, name, age, occupation, next of kin, religion, date of enlistment, pay, and injuries or cause of death.
