Chatto, Harry Stewart (Flying Officer, b.1920 - d.1945)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of 421569 Flying Officer Harry Stewart Chatto, 180 Squadron RAF, 1945.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Collection includes a letter Chatto sent to friend and former squadron mate, Warrant Officer John "Messy" Messiter, in early 1945. Chatto writes that he is to return to operations on B-25 Mitchell bombers, discusses leave, recent movements and activities, and mentions the love lives of mutual friends. Chatto, a navigator and observer, was shot down and killed on 21 March 1945. The collection includes a letter from Chatto's father, Ronald, to 'Johnnie', a friend of Chatto's. Ronald forwards transcripts of two letters he received from Wing Commander T A Cox, Chatto's commanding officer, with details on the action in which Chatto was posted as missing presumed killed.
