Studio portrait of Captain (Capt) Carol D'Arcy - Irvine (left), Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) George Charles Smith (centre) and Lieutenant (Lt) Hubert Sydney Centennial Simpson (right). Capt D'Arcy served with the 13th Battalion and was originally from Lewisham, NSW. A tram conductor prior to enlistment, Capt D'Arcy embarked with the 2nd Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Seang Bee (A48) on 11 Februrary 1915. He was killed in action on 20 June 1918 aged 25. 2nd Lt Smith served with the 13th Battalion and was originally from Bathurst, NSW. A grocer prior to enlistment, 2nd Lt Smith embarked with 9th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Argyllishire (A8). On 27 May 1917 he was taken as a Prisoner of War (POW) and was imprisoned in Hannover and Karlsruhe, Germany. He returned to Australia on 25 March 1919. Lt Simpson served with the 13th Battalion and originally from Haberfield. A clerk prior to enlistment, Lt Simpson embarked with the 13th Battalion, from Melbourne on HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 22 December 1914. He died of wounds on 30 March 1918 aged 30.
