Metal Plate from Benz engine. Reads: Motor Benz No 25547. Dimension of plate 79 mm x 15 mm. Figures are impressed and appear to have been blackened.

History / Summary

Karl Benz established his first factory at Mannheim in 1871 to manufacture two-stroke engines. In 1906 he became involved in aviation producing engines for non-rigid airships. 1913 saw limited production of the 100 HP Benz Bz.III for aircraft. In 1914 the Bz.III was introduced. The HP had been increased to160 and this engine powered many of the aircraft of the period. The 200 HP Bz.IV came next and was also successsful, powering many two-seater types.

Private (7159) Horace Alchin served with 17th Battalion AIF and the Australian Graves Detachment between 1917 and 1919.
