Clarke, Gustav William
Collection relating to 1735 Corporal (Cpl) Gustave William Clarke, who served with 4th Battalion AIF during the First World War. Comprises black and white photocopies of Cpl Clarke's two original handwritten diaries kept during his military service. Diary 1 covers the contains regular entries for the period 15 March 1915 (enlistment) to 26 April 1919 (return to Australia). Diary 2 contains the names and details of men from 4th Battalion, Standing Orders from the Commanding Officer 4th Battalion, as well as hand written training notes made by Cpl Clarke. Also included are typed transcripts of the diaries, biographical information, and scanned images of original wartime memorabilia related to Cpl Clarke, such as postcards, photographs, service papers, a matchbox, identification tags and medals, compiled into a manuscript document in 2015 by Kevin Slade, the husband of Cpl Clarke's great niece Helen Slade. The document also contains a contents page, and there is an index that is predominantly to the place names mentioned in the transcript of Diary 1.
