The funeral procession of Major (Maj) Francis Maitland Wyborn Parker, 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, probably approaching the cemetery in Cairo. A barrister from Perth, WA prior to enlistment, Maj Parker had been appointed as Crown Prosecutor and had previously served with the 1st Western Australian Mounted Infantry during the Boer War where he had been Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Distinguished Service Order. He also received the Queen’s Medal with four clasps and the King’s Medal with two clasps. Re-enlisting at the outbreak of war, he embarked with the 8th Battery from Fremantle on HMAT Medic on 31 October 1914. Following his arrival in Egypt, he became ill with cerebro spinal meningitis and on 18 March 1915, aged 38, he succumbed to his illness and was buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
