Description

Studio portrait of 35 Private (Pte) Bernie Clapham. A labourer from West Maitland, NSW, Pte Clapham enlisted on 11 January 1916 and embarked with the 34th Battalion, A Company, aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) in May 1916. Pte Clapham was killed by a shell while on fatigue duty at Messines Ridge, Belgium, on 21 July 1917. Pte Clapham's cousin, 1163 Pte William Henry Clapham served with the 4th Battalion, and was killed in action on 6 August 1915 at Gallipoli.
