Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of N385345 Private James Edward Lockhart, 56 Australian Infantry Battalion, Australia, c.1942.
Wallet 1 of 1 consists of one letter and one poem relating to Private Lockhart. In his letter to Mr Jim McLintock, dated 12 May 1942, Private Lockhart writes about applying for an exemption to go home for a period of time, possibly to work on his farm. He also writes about a recent repulsion of Japanese ships. The poem, titled “In Memory of Jim”, was written by Private Lockhart’s friend, NX125784 Private Bernard Vincent “Bernie” Beath. In his poem, Private Beath records the circumstances of Private Lockhart’s death and burial, and bids him farewell.
