Description

Left panel of diptych appropriates the imagery from a 1970s poster by Peter Dew (ARTV10230), an unofficial poster designed by the 1st Topographical Survey Troop in the format of a mock travel poster. Both posters feature two caricatured Australian soldiers charging forward with rifles firing, under enemy bombardment, while a civilian aeroplane flies across the top. The original image is based on an American design with changes made to the soldier's hats, rifles and insignia stripes to portray Australian servicemen. Jones has made only small changes to the original design, such as the flight path of the plane, the text and added collage element featuring a photograph of himself as a soldier.

Geoffrey Jones (55178) joined the Army in 1966, at the age of 17, as a means of escaping the constraints of a small country town. He served for six years and complete two deployments tours of Vietnam (1968 and 1970). He was discharged in 1971.
