Studio portrait of 5316 Sergeant (Sgt) Francis George Clark DCM MM (standing), 20th Australian Infantry Battalion of Colinton, NSW and a unknown Australian soldier. A plumber prior to enlistment on 16 February 1916, Private, later Lance Sergeant Clark was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) and Military Medal (MM) during his service in the First World War. He enlisted in the Second World War with the service number NX17124 and served with the 2/17th Battalion. Sergeant Francis George Clark DCM MM was killed in action at Tobruk on 7 June 1941, aged 49 and is buried at Tobruk War Cemetery. This photograph is part of a collection relating to Russell Bruce Clark and his father, Francis George Clark who both served in the Second World War. Francis Clark served in the First World War and then volunteered for service in the Second World War, stating he was 39 years old (he was 47 years old) in order to meet the age requirement for enlistment. He was killed in action on 7 June 1941 during the siege of Tobruk. Two of Francis Clark's younger brothers served in the same battalion during the Second World War: NX60569 Private Walter Herbert Clark (b. 1902), and NX30305 Private Roy Alfred Clark (b. 1910). Both survived the war. His son, NX134120 Russell Bruce Clark also served during the Second World War.
