Studio portrait of members of 17th Battalion, 6th Reinforcements, prior to their embarkation in November 1915. The reference to “Cake Walkers” is unknown.

Soldiers have been identified on matt, detailed identifications made from the embarkation roll for the unit are in brackets. Identified standing, left to right is: Reg Allen (2552 Private (Pte) Reginald Allen, returned to Australia 8 May 1919); Alf Bartlett (2585 Pte Alfred Bartlett, killed in action 31 August 1918); Dick Murphy (2716 Pte Harold Richard Murphy, died of disease 12 July 1916); Jack Dummigan (2628 Pte John Dummigan, returned to Australia 8 May 1919). Identified seated, left to right is: Hughie Roberts (2763 Pte Hugh Roberts, killed in action 22 August 1918); Tom Bartlett (2579 Pte Thomas Bartlett, returned to Australia 23 September 1918); Wally Sykes (2776 Pte Walter William Sykes, returned to Australia 19 April 1919); Frank Siely (2789 Pte Frank Ephraim Siely, returned to Australia 24 December 1918).
