The revival of German music, 1920
Description
This drawing depicts a 'Professor' conducting a choir of German children - each wearing the distinctive dress, and an identifying label of, the mercantile navy, trade, commerce and industry. The title 'The revival of German music' and caption '(Herr Professor) 'Quite a nice little class again - now, altogether my children' reveal that the children are a metaphor for the reconstruction of Germany after the First World War. The children depicted here would be adults in time for the Second World War, so this drawing can be seen as a prediction of Germany's recovery leading to another war.
