Mather, Sydney (Private, b.1892 - d.1916)
Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of 3983 Private Sydney Mather of the 4th Australian Infantry Battalion during his journey from Australia to Egypt. Collection consists of one original handwritten letter, dated 16 January 1916, written by Pte Mather while on board the troopship 'Medic', to Marjorie Isabel Crawford of Sydney. The letter describes seeing his mates aboard the troopship reading letters and smiling. Also wanting to have a letter and smile, he finds the chaplain handing out books with letters inside them. This letter is Mather's response to the letter he received from 11 year old Marjorie. Mather died of wounds in France in June 1916.
