Description

Collection relating to the Australian Special Wireless Group in the Second World War. Collection consists of a 420 page typescript manuscript titled "The History of the Australian Special Wireless Group, 1939 to 1947" by Robert (Bob) Hartley, AM. The manuscript is written in three parts, with part one covering the establishment of the No 1 Special Wireless Section and their work in the Middle East between 1939 and 1942, including the formation of the Australian Special Wireless Group at Bonegilla in May 1942. Part two continues with the development of the unit between 1943 and 1947, when the 101 Wireless Regiment was raised in Cabarlah. Part 3 contains annexes such as transcripts of war diaries, reports, meeting minutes and extracts from other sources. Also discusses the role of the Australian Women's Army Service in staffing various wireless stations in Australia.
