Description

Bob Muntz (DOB 1947) grew up in Colac in Western Victoria where his pro-Labor father was a school. In 1965, he enrolled as a science student at Monash University and, influenced by a Teach-in on Vietnam, began his anti-war activities. Called up in 1967, he registered for national service as he could not claim to be a conscientious objector. In 1968 he began a MSc degree at the Florey Institute at Melbourne University and in 1970 got a job at the Victorian Department of Agriculture but was sacked soon after due to the intervention of the Victorian Police Special Branch. He then committed himself to draft resistance and became a founding member of the Draft Resisters Union, representing the DRU on the 1971 Moratorium Committee and participating in many actions. He ultimately went underground. Muntz moved from research to social-issues activism, working in community health and occupational health and safety and later in social justice in South-East Asia, including for Oxfam Community Aid Abroad. In 2002, he joined the Greens, standing in the 2007 Federal election and later supporting the work of Greens Parliamentarian Adam Bandt. (Description provided by interviewer).
