Description

Trevor Ashton (DOB 1943) grew up in Sale where his father was a house painter and a keen unionist. His family were strong members of the Baptist Church. He moved to Melbourne to work in the public service, joined the Young Labor Association and when Menzies announced conscription, was asked by the ALP to form the Youth Campaign Against Conscription (YCAC) which he did, and as secretary very successfully united members drawn from many different peace and political groups opposed to the war. In 1966 the YCAC was very active in the Federal election in which the ALP campaigned strongly against the war and against conscription and suffered a landslide defeat. The YCAC dissolved after that but Ashton maintained his anti-war activity. (Description provided by interviewer).
