Studio portrait of 2317 Private (Pte) Claude Henry Watson Knowles MM, 13 Light Horse Regiment, of Barmah, Victoria. A farm labourer prior to enlistment, Pte Knowles embarked with the 18th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Suevic A29 on 21 June 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal for his conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Proyart, France on 22 and 23 August 1918. He returned to Australia on 20 July 1919.
