Description
Studio portrait of 521 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Robert Sumner. A tailor from Fitzroy, Victoria, L Cpl Sumner enlisted on 17 August 1914 and embarked with the rank of Bugler with the 6th Battalion, E Company, aboard HMAT Hororata (A20). Following service at Gallipoli, he transferred with his unit to France. He was brielfy assigned to the 2nd Field Ambulance in April 1917, before being re-attached as a medical detail to the 6th Battalion. As a 1914 recruit, L Cpl Sumner was eligible for "Anzac Leave" and returned to Australia on 23 December 1918.
