Records of the Allied Geographical Section, SWPA (South West Pacific Area)
This series consists of publications which were produced by the AGS between 1942 and 1945. The section produced a variety of reports including:
· terrain studies
· terrain handbooks
· special reports
· spot reports
· ad hoc reports (which were prepared for different theatres and included reports on Burma, Indo-China, Malaya and Siam).
· sailing directions
· vegetation studies
· annotated bibliography
· miscellaneous publications
The major publications included details such as general history of the area, military importance, administration, airfields, cities and towns, climate, communications, description of coastline, medical problems, population, ports and harbours, resources, rivers and canals, roads and railroads and vegetation.
The series represents a substantial proportion of the total number of publications produced by the AGS. To date, no stocktake has been undertaken to determine if there are any publications missing from the series.
Part of this series also includes numerous reports published by the Inter Services Topographical Department based at Oxford which was the British equivalent to AGS. They are prefixed by the number 12/-.
More information can be found in the introduction to the series.
