Records of the Australian Defence Force [ADF] Peacekeeping Centre
The records housed in this series were former library materials belonging to the Australian Defence Force Peacekeeping Centre (ADFPC). Some items bear the stamp of the Australian Joint Warfare Establishment (AJWL) library. This organisation was so named in 1975, and was renamed the Australian Defence Force Warfare Centre (ADFWC) in 1990. In January 1993, the ADF Peacekeeping Centre was established as part of the ADFWC.
This material was transferred from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Peacekeeping Centre at RAAF Williamtown (NSW) to the Peacekeeping and Post Cold War Operations Official History Unit at the Australian War Memorial in the mid-2000s.
Content
The bulk of the series contains the papers recording the Australian involvement in the UN sponsored missions of Somalia, Liberia, Rwanda and Bosnia. The remainder of the series comprises of various UN papers dealing with a wide range of peacekeeping activity, kept and used by the library of the ADFPC. The documents are official in nature, containing copies of press releases, resolutions, after action reports lessons learned reports and guidelines for governments contributing military personnel. The series includes five albums containing 35mm projector slides, reflecting the various deployments made by Australia. In addition, there exists a small amount of material assembled by an Australian officer, such as newspapers articles, demographic and geographic outlines (Rwanda) and other written resources, one of which describes the evolution of Peacekeeping.
The series holds 147 items. At the time the series was accessioned, in 2009, only four originated in the OPEN period (as defined by the Australian Archives Act 1983). These items will display when searching the series with more being visible to the public in future (see ‘Using the series’).
