CHABAI/SORAKEN AREA, BOUGAINVILLE, 1945-06-16. BRIG J.R. STEVENSON, COMMANDER 11 INFANTRY BRIGADE, INSPECTING A TYPE 89 TANK FOUND BY C COMPANY, 26 INFANTRY BATTALION (AIF).The Battalion war diary for 14 June 1945 notes: "At 1230L a patrol located an enemy tank at 326708, the tank was dug in and in good mechanical condition except for a missing generator. The tanks was a type similar to that found at RURI BAY (medium tank model 89 B (1929)). The 57 mm gun and ammunition is on the ground beside the tank. " AWM 52/8/3/64/21 March June 1945 folio 86. This photograph shows the front glacis plate, which on the Type 89 tank was almost vertical.
