Description

Outdoor group portrait of 5 Platoon, B Company, 38th Battalion. See second image for the handwritten names of the men recorded on the reverse of the print by Captain (Capt) Ernest William Latchford. Most of these men embarked from Melbourne with B Company, 38th Battalion, aboard HMAT Runic (A54) on 20 June 1916. The number of names listed in each of the four columns on the back of the print, matches the number of men in each row of the portrait, from back row (far left column) to front row (far right column). Top to bottom in each column is equivalent to left to right in each row. The soldiers are probably, back row: Mc Neild, either 615 Private (Pte) James Dougan McNeil or 630 Pte William James Nield (died of wounds 27 February 1917, France); Myers, either 593 Pte James Lennard Kennedy Myers (killed in action [KIA] 8 September 1918, France) or 594 Pte William Henry Myers; Walker (unable to further identify); Myers, either 593 Pte James Lennard Kennedy Myers (KIA 8 September 1918, France) or 594 Pte William Henry Myers; Sutton, 658 Pte Herbert Sutton; Hawken F, 566 Pte Francis William Hawken (KIA 13 October 1917, Belgium); Wright, 688 Pte Cecil Robeshaw Wright; Cann, 519 Pte Francis Claude Cann; Nihill M, 629 Pte Matthew James Nihill (died of wounds 14 July 1917, France); Scott, 667 Pte John Joseph Scott (KIA 13 October 1917, Belgium); Stevens, possibly 662 Pte William Thomas Stevens (embarked with C Company but originally in B Company).
