Description

In October 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) became the first United States President to visit Australia. He travelled to 5 cities over 3 days starting his tour in Canberra where he laid a wreath at the Memorial. This poster was created as part of a campaign by the NSW Government to mobilise the public and engender support for his visit. The slogan ‘Sydney’s Day for LBJ’ was just one of the many created to encourage patriotic flag waving crowds. It played on Prime Minister Holt’s much quoted slogan of support for Lyndon Johnson ‘All the way with LBJ’. Others included: ‘Hip Hip hooray for LBJ’, ‘Cheer today for LBJ’, Enjoy your stay LBJ’ and ‘Make Sydney Gay for LBJ’. Prime Minister Holt, whose Liberal-Country Party supported the US led war in Vietnam, had invited LBJ and the Government expected him to receive a friendly welcome. However tens of thousands of anti-war protestors greeted him during his time in Australia.
