Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX54905 Corporal Norman Frank Wild, HQ AIF Malaya, 1940-1945. Collection consists of one notice of application of enlistment, one letter from Wild to family members written in 1941, three POW postcards sent to Nell (Wild's wife) during his time in Burma and Thailand, two notices confirming Wild's death from illness while a prisoner of war in 1944 and two condolence letters from officers who had known Wild. Wild was a member of A Force, the first group of POWs sent from Changi to Burma, initially working on the aerodrome at Tavoy before going to work on the Burma-Thai Railway. In January 1944, along with most of the POWs who had worked on the railway, he was sent to a camp at Tamarkan to recuperate, but contracted dysentery, was hospitalised and died.
