Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of VX16593 Corporal George Loughlin Blore, HQ 20 Australian Infantry Brigade, England, 1940-1941. Collection consists of a handwritten diary written across two notebooks, and five travel documents. The diary covers the period from May 1940 to September 1941 when Corporal Blore was based in Surrey, England and the Middle East. It includes details of daily life in the service, Blore's visits to Milford, Guildford, the Cotswolds, London, Gaza and Jerusalem, and his observations of the town of Coventry before and after its destruction by bombing. The diary also includes details about Corporal Blore's voyage by sea to and from England and his experiences in Cape Town, South Africa, and Freetown in Sierra Leone. The diary also mentions multiple air raids, trench digging, Blore's strong Christian faith, and his interest in photography and architecture. Corporal Blore went on to further service in New Guinea and was discharged on 16 November 1945.
