Description

Toned studio pre-enlistment portrait of 6320 Private (Pte) Percival Luck, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards, framed beneath an ornamental, reverse-painted sheet of glass depicting waratahs, wattle and the patriotic slogan 'He heard the call and answered'. Born in Wartling, East Sussex, Percival Luck served as a reservist prior to emigrating to Sydney, Australia where he married Edith Snoad in 1913. Their daughter Gwendoline was born in 1914. At the declaration of the First World War, Pte Luck was recalled to duty as a reservist with his regiment and returned to England. After the battle at La Bassee, he was reported missing in action on 25 January 1915, aged 27 and has no known grave. Pte Luck is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, France.
