Commemorative brooch pin: Mrs Janet Kelley
Rectangular brass brooch with ‘5701’ and ‘7818’ in relief. Engraved on reverse with ‘Janet Kelley 1929’. The back of the brooch also features a horizontal pin and a small piece of chain, attached to the centre top of the brooch.
This personalised commemorative brooch pin, embossed with the service numbers ‘5701’ and ‘7818’, was worn by Mrs Janet Kelley, mother of 7818 Private Walter Edward Kelley and 5701 Private John Kelley. There was a large commercial market for commemorative jewellery following the war. This example has been personalised by Janet.
Private John Kelley enlisted for service, aged 22, in December 1915. Private Walter Edward Kelley was 21 years when he enlisted on 31 August 1917. Walter Kelley served with 15 Battalion and died of wounds on 24 September 1918. Private John Kelley served with a number of units through the war and was twice wounded in 1917. He returned to Australia on 15 May 1919.
