Melville, Jack Leslie (Private, b.1898 - d.1917)
Collection relating to the First World War service of 2528 Private Jack Leslie Melville, 54th Australian Infantry Battalion, Australia, England and France, 1916-1917. Collection consists of three handwritten letters from Jack to Ruby and Edith Bulkeley, one postcard to Ruby and one Roll of Honour newsclipping from 1917. Jack's letters detail his march from camp in Sydney to the Harbour before boarding for deployment, his trip overseas, his impatience at having to wait to move to the front lines in France and his excitement at being selected to join a group of reinforcements. The postcard sent to Ruby is a regular field service card. The newspaper clipping is a Roll of Honour column, listing soldiers who had been killed during the war, including Jack's name, closest relations and date of death on 14 March 1917.
