Digger on a camel
Description
This sculpture offers historical insight on the life of Australian soldiers beyond the battlefield. Playfully seated on the camel smiling, the digger captures a moment of recreation for Australian soldiers, as they found themselves in foreign lands. It supports the known cultural trend of the period whereby Australian service personnel had their photographs taken on camels while visiting the Pyramids in Egypt.
Chalkware was a popular during the early 19th to mid-20th Century, its fragility due to a lack of firing or glaze has meant that very few pieces have survived in good condition.
Donated through the Australian Government's Cultural Gifts Program in 2016
