Identity disc: Private Alexander Leslie Dobson, 45 Battalion, AIF
Alumimium identity disc impressed 'A L DOBSON/ 13 [crossed out] A 45 BATT/ 5756/ CE'.
Alexander Leslie Dobson, a farm labourer from Burragorang, NSW, enlisted in the AIF on 23 August 1915 and was assigned as a private, service number 5756, to the 12th reinforcements to 13th Battalion. In March 1916, while training in Egypt, he was transferred to 45th Battalion. In France, on 8 July, Dobson was severely wounded by a stray shell that hit the lines, suffering compound fractures to his jaw and both bones in his lower arm. He was evacuated to King George Hospital in London. By the end of August he was well enough to be transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield. Although judged sufficiently recovered to be able to undertake training with a view to returning to active service in France, Dobson was instead returned to Australia for a 'rest' in February 1917. He was discharged medically unfit in July.
