Monro, Trevor Donald (Lance Corporal, b.1912 - d.?)
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX3543 Lance Corporal Trevor Donald Monro, 6 Division Engineers, POW, Germany and Australia, 1941-1949.
Lance Corporal Munro was captured during the Battle of Crete in May 1941 and interned as a prisoner of war in Germany. Collection consists of:
- 2 x pages of handwritten poems, 'Memories of Crete', 'Africa' and 'The Cad'. 'Africa' and 'Memories of Crete' discuss war experiences, and 'The Cad' discusses drinking beer;
- 1 x letter from the Minister of the Army to LCPL Monro's wife informing her that he was a prisoner of war at Stalag XIIIC (located at Hammelburg, Bavaria), dated 6 December 1941;
- 1 x German POW postcard simply signed by LCPL Monro, with prefilled text stating that he is a POW and that he is in good health;
- 1 x Christmas card, postmarked 7 January 1942, with an image of soldiers (including one dressed at Father Christmas), illustrated by 'Thomas Burke, POW Stalag XXA';
- 1 x empty German POW Australian Red Cross envelope, addressed from LCPL Monro's wife to him while he is a POW;
- 2 x postcards on 'Kriegsgefangenenpost' (POW post) stationary written dated 2 July and 9 October 1942, written by LCPL Monro to his wife discussing topics such as his health, his work, and post received;
- 1 x soldier's pay book (continuation) covering the period 23 October 1939 to 7 August 1945;
- 1 x certificate of discharge dated, 2 August 1945;
- 1 x letter written in German from the Junker family on whose farm LCPL Monro worked whilst a POW in Germany. The letter is dated 14 August 1949 and is accompanied by a typed translation. In the letter, LCPL Monro is called 'August', owing to the German family's difficulty in pronouncing 'Trevor'. The letter is a reply to one written by LCPL Monro to the family. The letter discusses the general affairs of the family in the years since the war, and the state of Germany, including a mention of the large population displacement that they are witnessing.
