Brown, Walter Ernest (Gunner, b.1885 - d.1942)
Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of NX35492 Walter Ernest Brown VC DCM, Singapore, 1942. Collection consists of two letters, one written to Brown by his sister Edie wishing for his safe return and the other written by the Postmaster General's Office detailing their failure to deliver the first letter. Brown served in both world wars and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on the Western Front in 1918. After re-enlisting in 1940 (despite being over age), he went to Singapore as part of the 8th Division. The exact circumstances surrounding Brown's death are unknown, however he disappeared the evening before the surrender of Singapore in 1942 and was eventually declared missing presumed deceased in 1946.
