Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of 402268 Flight Lieutenant Sydney Thomas Wickham, 459 Squadron, RAAF. Collection consists of a flying log book covering the period from September 1940 to July 1942. The log book includes regular entries that detail type of aircraft, pilots and duty undertaken. Pasted into the log book, are a four certificates indicating various courses and instruction Wickham has passed.

History / Summary

Flight Lieutenant Sydney Thomas Wickham, 459 Squadron, was captured in late July 1942 in the water off Sidi Barrani, Africa, after his aircraft was shot down. During his imprisonment he was moved from Tobruk to Germany, and then spent time in Oflag XXIB in Schubin, Poland from January to April 1943, before being transferred to Stalag Luft III, Sagan, where he was imprisoned from April 1943 to January 1945. From January to May that year, Wickham was forced marched and spent time in various camps, until his liberation on 2 May 1945.
