Description
Studio portrait of 2086 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Frederick Douglas Smith, 5th Battalion. A carpenter from Stawell, Victoria, Smith enlisted on 13 January 1915 and embarked as a Private with the 5th Battalion, 5th Reinforcements, aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) in April. Following service on Gallipoli, his unit was posted to France where he was promoted to L Cpl. He was killed in action at Pozieres on 25 July 1916. L Cpl Smith has no known grave and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France. This portrait has been created from an existing studio portrait, cut around and re photographed.
