Description

VX38691 Major Arthur Mawson with his Salvation Army Red Shield Mobile Unit in Palestine. The van was gifted to the Salvation Army by "The Golfers of New South Wales". Born on 20 July 1892 in Whitwood, England, Arthur Mawson emigrated to Australia in 1910. He enlisted in the AIF as 2138 Private Arthur Mawson on 27 April 1916 and embarked with the 15th Reinforcements, 13th Light Horse Regiment, from Melbourne aboard HMAT (A67) Orsova on 6 December 1916. Following his return to Australia, Arthur Mawson trained as a Salvation Army Chaplain. He reenlisted on 26 August 1940 and served as Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Salvation Army Red Shield Services in the Middle East, during which time he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
