Group portrait of ten members of the 3rd Reinforcements of the 53rd Battalion. They embarked from Sydney on 14 April 1916 aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) and all returned to Australia. Known to be in the image but positions unknown are: 1903 Private (Pte) Robert James Duncan from Sydney, NSW; 1999 Pte James Stone from Paddington, NSW; 1923 Pte Thomas Edward Higgins from Nowra, NSW; 1958 Thomas Michael McCann from Surrey Hills, NSW; 1870 Pte Reginald Clement Berg from Hazelbrook, NSW; 1878 Pte George Brown from Sydney; 1969 Pte Henry William Ough from Moonee Ponds, Victoria; A Mooney (not further identified); 2015 Pte Roger Bede Whelan from Randwick, NSW; and 1972 Pte Charles Mathew Park from Bulli, NSW. This image relates to 3170 Staff Sergeant Major Francis (Frank) Arthur Abbott, 24th and 33rd Battalion, killed in action in France on 31 August 1918.
