Rowlands, George (Private, b.1891 - d.1917)
Collection relating to the First World War service of 5739 Private George Rowlands, 9 Australian Infantry Battalion, at sea and France, 1916-1917.
Collection consists of three letters written by Private Rowlands to his sister Ada, dated 26 May 1916, 14 February 1917, and 26 October 1917. The letters discuss Rowlands' voyage to Europe, how much he is enjoying this time at sea, and his future wishes to work on a boat in some capacity; replies to various pieces of news from Australia and the various communications that he is receiving from family and friends; and the condition of the trenches near the front line. The last letter is written just eight days before Rowlands receives a gunshot wound to the left leg that would ultimately lead to his death.
