Description

Studio portrait of 5739 Private (Pte) George Rowlands, 9th Battalion. A miner from Watsonville, Queensland, Pte Rowlands volunteered for the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force in August 1914, though did not participate in the action in New Guinea before being discharged on 18 September 1914. On 22 January 1916, Rowlands re-enlisted and embarked for overseas service on 19 November 1916. He died of wounds on 4 November 1917 and was buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
