Blue, Naval Lieutenant Jeffrey N. Zaun, Iraq, 1991
Fairskye has depicted the right side of Lieutenant Jeffrey N. Zaun's face in a realistic style, while the left side is distorted, as if being stretched and pulled by an external force. The work comments on the role of prisoners of war in the progress of the First Gulf War and the way their images were used, by the media, for propaganda purposes. Zaun was the navigator of a Grumman A-6E Intruder attack aircraft when his plane was shot out of the sky on the 17 January 1991 and he was forced to eject. He awoke behind enemy lines and was captured by Iraqi soldiers and taken as a POW until his release on 3 March 1991. For his entire captivity he was held 15 minute drive from Baghdad where he became dangerously close to being bombed by allied aircraft. Zaun was forced to appear on television and make a statement against the war. This video was broadcast around the world on CNN. Zaun was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal.
