Replica trousers of a private as worn at Eureka Stockade, 1854 : 40th Regiment of Foot
Replica uniform trousers of a private of the 40th Regiment of Foot, representing the uniform worn by members of the regiment present at Eureka Stockade at Ballarat in 1854. Pair dark blue wool serge high waisted trousers with 8mm wide scarlet welts on side seams, and modern broad cream webbing braces. Trousers may be later 19th century military trousers that have been adapted to represent trousers from the 1854 period. The cotton twill pocket has been machine sewn up and there is extensive modern machine stitching at the cotton twill waist lining. The buttons at the waist are brass and have 'OUR OWN MAKE' stamped into the underside. The smaller brass buttons at the fly opening are of various types; 'LYLE BROS. BALLARAT', 'HENRY BALE EXETER', and unmarked brass. On different areas of the waist lining are two handwritten names in blue ink; 'BENGER', and ' MATTHEW'. Supplied, but not made by, Bermans & Nathans with the coatee, REL/21502.001.
