C5A support for MFO
Coverage of the eight day round the world flight of the Lockheed C-5A Galaxy transport aircraft in support of the Multi-national Force Observers supervising the Israeli withdrawal from the Sinai under the terms of the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel. The flight commenced at Travers Air Force Base California with the first destination Edmonton Canada to pick up the nine Iroqious helicopters of the Canadian 408th Tactical Helicopter Squadron. The Canadian contingent were to replace the Anzac Rotary Wing Squadron which had contributed to the MFO's aviation support. Shows loading of the Canadian helicopters into the C-5A and farewell by family and friends. The next destination was Tel Aviv Israel which the C-5A reached non stop by means of a mid air refuelling. Arrival at Ben Gurion International Airport and off loading the helicopters onto trucks which transported the squadron to the assembly area. The eight Australian helicopters were then loaded into the C-5A. Max Page a Senior Engineer with the Anzac Rotary Wing Squadron comments on the Australians leaving the MFO. The departure of the fifty five Australians and the flight to RAAF Fairbairn Canberra via Cario and Diego Garcia. The arrival of the C-5A at Canberra on 20 March 1986 day six of the operation. The Australians were welcomed by family and friends and were addressed by the Minister for Defence Mr Kim Beasley. The C-5A then returned to the United States arriving on 22 March 1986 day eight of the operation. The aircraft was operated by two crews from the 27th and 75th Military Airlift Squadrons USAF.
