Description

Sutlej Medal with three clasps 'FEROZESHUHUR', 'ALIWAL' and 'SOBRAON'. Impressed on the edge with the recipient's rank, name and regiment on the edge. Obverse: The young head of Queen Victoria with 'VICTORIA' to the left and 'REGINA' to the right. Reverse: A standing figure of Victory holding a laurel crown, with a pile of captured weapons at her feet. The legend 'ARMY OF THE SUTLEJ' appears around the top circumference and 'MOODKEE 1845' in the exergue. The medal is fitted with a swivelling scroll suspender and three battle clasps which have rosettes on the lower corner edges. A piece of 32 mm blue ribbon with red edges is attached to the suspender.

History / Summary

Awarded to Quartermaster J Moore who served with the 50th Regiment during the First Sikh War and was present at the battles of Moodkee on 18 December 1845, Ferozeshurur on 21 - 22 December 1845, Aliwal on 28 January 1846 and Sobraon on 10 February 1846, where the regiment distinguished itself on every occasion. The 50th Foot also fought during the Punniar battle on 29 December 1843 and it is possible that Moore was also entitled to the bronze campaign star made from guns captured on this day.
