Description

Mixed collection containing diaries, official and private correspondence, certificates and awards, remembrance service programs, obituaries and tributes relating to Captain Owen Williams' service in New Guinea, and his death at Aitape while dressing wounds under fire. The diaries (October 1942 to June 1943) describe his experiences as a Medical Officer with the 2/2 Field Ambulance at Bena Bena, Wau and Salamaua, while the letters to his family (1945) describe his experiences as Regimental Medical Officer with the 2/4 Battalion in the Aitape-Wewak area. The collection includes his Mentioned in Despatches Certificate and his Warrant of Appointment to the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), as well as sympathy letters from relatives, friends of the family, and former teachers at the King's School, Parramatta, the University of Sydney and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, attesting to Captain Williams' great personal qualities.
