Turkish Aerial Bomb
Description
Pear shaped Turkish aerial bomb from the First World War. The bomb is made from cast mild steel and has been soldered together from two halves. The front of the bomb has impact damage causing separation at the nose. There is no evidence of explosive detonation. Provision is made for a rear mounted percussion fuze. The tail of the bomb is missing. The metal shows signs of minor deterioration. The bomb has a dark grey bordering on black colour scheme. There are no manufacturer markings on this aerial bomb.
History / Summary
This bomb was dropped from an enemy aircraft near the ordnance dump at North Beach two days before the evacuation of ANZAC forces from Gallipoli. The bomb failed to detonate and subsequently had the explosive filler and the fuze removed.
