QX6461 Lieutenant (Lt) Robert Haslewood Savile Kelsey, 2/26 Battalion (left) and NX35617 Driver William Wallace Fackender, Australian Army Service Corps, 8th Aust Division (right) examining the famous "broom" wireless set of Changi gaol which the Japanese authorities failed to discover. The set was made by Lt R. Wright, Aust Army Ordnance Corps, who operated the set whilst Lt Kelsey kept watch. Of the 60 men in their hut, only Kelsey and Wright knew of the radio's existence and location. Notes about what was heard over the radio were collected by an unknown hand, extended around the hut wall from outside, and taken to senior officers in the camp. The identity of both the operators and couriers were not known to each other, to ensure that, if caught, neither could identify the other.
