Phetburi, Thailand. 23 September 1945. Warrant Officer Class 2 Walter Peeler VC, 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion gives eyes right as he leads his Company of ex-prisoners of war (POWs) of the Japanese past the saluting base where Major C. E. Green, Commanding Officer, 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion, takes the salute at the Phetburi POW Camp. Major Green had been the Commanding Officer of Green Battalion, part of Brigadier A. L. Varley's A Force in Burma 1942-44. WO2 Peeler, born in 1887, enlisted in the 2nd AIF by understating his age by 15 years. He had been awarded the Victoria Cross on 4 October 1917 as a member of the 3rd Pioneer Battalion attached to the 37th Battalion, AIF.
