21714 Sergeant (later Flight Sergeant [Fit Sgt]) Donald Clarence Kirkwood of Smithfield, NSW, Navigator and Observer of No. 30 (Beaufighter) Squadron RAAF who participated in several successful offensive sweeps against Japanese shipping in the New Britain area. Fit Sgt Kirkwood's aircraft failed to return from such a mission on 17 December, 1943 from which he was eventually taken prisoner by the Japanese. He died in a prisoner of war camp on New Britain on 05 March 1944.
