Webley & Scott No 2 Mk 1 Signal Pistol
Webley & Scott No 2 Mk 1 single shot, break action signal pistol. The breech has a press down latch on the top to open the action. The left side of the barrel is stamped 1917 WEBLEY & SCOTT Ltd LONDON & BIRMINGHAM No 2 Mark 1 with proof marks and the serial number. The butt has a lanyard ring. The grips are missing and overall the steel has surface rust.
This pistol was taken from a British aeroplane which was forced to land in no- man's land near Bouzencourt on 10/4/1918. The injured aviator was rescued by Lieutenant Hill of the 31st Battalionn, who went out in broad daylight. That night the battery fired on the plane with incendiary shells in order to destroy it. The following night Sgt C S Lavender accompanied a patrol and recovered the flare pistol (Capt Walker, 8th Altm Bty).
