OFF SYDNEY, NSW. PORT BOW VIEW OF THE HEAVY CRUISER HMAS AUSTRALIA (II) AS SHE APPEARED AFTER HER 1938-1939 REFIT. THE SHIP HAS HAD HER BRIDGEWORK EXTENDED. THE FOUR SINGLE 4 INCH MK V AA GUNS HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY EIGHT TWIN 4 INCH MK XVI WEAPONS ON MK XIX MOUNTINGS. THE OLD 4 INCH GUNDECK HAS BEEN REMOVED AND THE NEW MOUNTINGS PLACED ON THE UPPER DECK. A NEW DIRECTOR CONTROL TOWER HAS BEEN FITTED AND THE ORIGINAL MOVED AFT, REPLACING THE HIGH ANGLE CONTROL POSITION AND THE ORIGINAL CRANE. A SEARCHLIGHT TOWER HAS BEEN ADDED JUST BEFORE IT. HIGH ANGLE CONTROL POSITIONS HAVE BEEN ADDED IN THE BRIDGE WINGS. NEW CRANES HAVE BEEN ADDED AMIDSHIPS, PORT AND STARBOARD. THE FOUR SINGLE TWO POUNDER AA GUNS HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY QUADRUPLE 2 POUNDER MOUNTINGS ON PLATFORMS PORT AND STARBOARD JUST FORWARD OF THE SEARCHLIGHT TOWER. HER MAIN ARMAMENT AND DIRECTOR ARE TRAINED TO PORT. THE SEAGULL V AMPHIBIAN IS ON ITS CATAPULT. (NAVAL HISTORICAL COLLECTION).
